Laser Operator & Laser Safety Officer (LSO) Training

 

Genius Laser Technology has developed a laser operator and laser safety officer training course specific to the Australian events industry. 

This course is a one day theory and hands on course with an examination at the end.

If the examination is passed then the applicant can apply for a Laser Safety officer license from Radiation Health.

The course and examination are approved and recognised from Radiation Health Western Australia and Radiation Health Tasmania for laser safety and operations including obtaining your Laser Safety Officer License for Class 3B and Class 4 entertainment laser systems. 

The training meets the requirements of Australian regulations for high-powered Class 3B and Class 4 laser systems.

Our Laser Operator and Laser Safety Officer Training is designed for technicians working with lasers in concerts, festivals, outdoor projections, and other live events. It combines essential theory with practical, hands-on learning to ensure operators can produce world-class laser shows safely and compliantly.

What You'll Learn

    How lasers work, key terminology, and the unique properties of laser light.
  • Laser Safety & Hazards
    Eye and skin risks, Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE), Nominal Ocular Hazard Distance (NOHD), and safe operating practices.

    IEC 60825-1, AS/NZS 2211, and state-specific licensing/permit requirements for entertainment lasers.
  • Laser Classes & Equipment
    Understanding laser classifications (1–4), common wavelengths, projector components, and control systems.

    Planning shows, setting projection zones, using emergency stops, beam masking, and avoiding reflections.
  • Outdoor Laser Use
    NOTAMs, aircraft spotting, termination points, and preventing distraction hazards.
  • Maintenance & Alignment
    Safe alignment procedures, use of optical density (OD) eyewear, and service precautions.
  • Pangolin Software & Control
    Operation of FB4 hardware, BEYOND and QuickShow software, live control, playlists, and projection zone programming.
  • Practical Skills
    Hands-on setup of laser systems, safety signage, pre-show checks, troubleshooting, and running a live show.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be certified in both the technical and creative aspects of laser operation—able to deliver spectacular shows while meeting the highest safety standards.

Laser Operator 

  • Role: Runs the laser system during a show or event.
  • Focus: Following an existing safety plan and operating within pre-set parameters.
  • Responsibilities:
    • Powering up, aligning, and running the lasers during rehearsals and live shows.
    • Following the Display Safety Record (DSR) or other documented safety plan.
    • Making sure beams stay within approved zones.
    • Using emergency stop (E-stop) if something goes wrong.
  • Authority: Can stop the show if there’s a hazard, but generally does not design or approve the safety plan.

Laser Safety Officer (LSO)

  • Role: Oversees the entire safety framework for laser use, from planning to compliance.
  • Focus: Hazard assessment, safety design, and regulatory compliance.
  • Responsibilities:
    • Conducting risk assessments and hazard zone calculations (NOHD, MPE, etc.).
    • Designing the safe layout of projection zones and beam paths.
    • Ensuring compliance with IEC 60825-1, and any state-specific permit/licensing rules.
    • Approving the Display Safety Record and all safety documentation.
    • Briefing operators and crew.
    • Being the point of contact for regulators (e.g., Radiation Health, CASA, Air Services for outdoor shows).
  • Authority: Has the final say on whether a laser display can proceed. Can override creative or production decisions if safety is at risk.
