Pangolin

Quickshow & Beyond

To make a great laser show, you need great laser software. Pangolin has two main programs that create and display shows. Quick Show gives you the basics, while Beyond has all the features and power you will ever need. Both programs come from Pangolin, the industry’s leader for over 25 years. This experience has culminated in the all-new Beyond. If you want the ultimate lasershow software, there is only one choice: Beyond!

Pangolin Beyond

A Beyond system consists of software and hardware for PC computers. The two components work together to get the best possible performance from laser projectors.

Beyond’s software lets you create, edit and present laser graphics and beam effects.

Beyond’s hardware (Ethernet FB4,  QM2000 board or USB FB3 box) converts software commands into signals to control an ILDA-compatible laser projector.

Beyond is by far the most powerful and advanced laser software control package we have ever used. We have been using it at every single event since it was introduced and it has been a great tool allowing us to push the limit of laser technology at each event.

Beyond Ultimate features a unique 3D modeling and animation module. It is similar to CAD programs such as Autodesk 3ds MAX and Maxon Cinema 4D, but it is totally optimized for laser output.

You can create 3D objects and worlds, and make 3D animations. It takes care of hidden lines, coloring, point count, and all the tedious details.

If you are familiar with our previous LD MAX and LD 4D converter software, Beyond gives even better output.

Beyond technical details and requirements

There are two parts to Beyond: The software, and a hardware output device. Both are included in the cost of a Beyond system.

Computer System

Beyond software runs on any modern Windows PC. We run powerfull I7 processor with as many cores as posisble, a dediacetd video card and as much memory as you can afford.   Beyond has become so advanced that these factors are important in running a stable system.

Hardware output device (FB4, or FB3)

To control a laser projector, you must have a, FB4, QM2000 or FB3. When you order Beyond, you get to choose which one will come with your system.

The FB4  is a new network interface from Pangolin that opens up a world of possibilities for professional laser show control.

The FB4 allows you to run your laser shows over any network using stand Network connections and cables. It can also be controlled using DMX or Artnet . It featured an Oled Screen with a menu to give you various playback options including SD card playback, geometric adjustments, colour and orientation control. The FB4’s also comes with quick show as free software.

The FB3 is an external box that has a USB connection on one side, and an ILDA-compatible connector output on the other side. The USB plugs into your computer while the ILDA connector plugs into your laser projector.

The laser projector should have an ILDA connector that is truly compatible with the ILDA laser show control standard. Some less-expensive projectors may have ILDA-style connectors, but the wiring or voltages differ from the standard. Check with us if you are not sure about your projector.

For the best laser graphics, we highly recommend using “30K” scanners or better. These scanners can draw the ILDA Test Pattern correctly at a speed of 30,000 points per second.

It is possible to use slower scanners, but graphics may appear distorted. Usually, for beam effects and shapes (cones, planes of laser light, etc.) slower scanners down to about 12K are acceptable.

Using multiple laser projectors

One of the great features of Beyond is that it can control a large amount of laser projectors simultaneously. Each projector will need its own FB4, QM2000 or FB3.

A Beyond multi-projector system can use any combination of hardware — all QM2000s, all FB3s, or mixed.

Using Beyond without its associated hardware (no dongle needed!)

When you first run Beyond, it looks for your hardware (FB4, QM2000 or FB3). It then authorizes the computer. You can later disconnect the hardware, and still continue to create, edit and even run shows on the computer for a limited time. Beyond includes an output “Preview Window” to give you an idea of what the laser output should look like.

For example, this allows you to use Beyond on a notebook while on an airline flight, or otherwise away from your laser equipment.

It is possible to authorize multiple computers. In this way, you have additional workstations. Keep in mind, however, that sometimes laser projector output looks different from what you see in Beyond’s Preview Window. Only by actually attaching the hardware and seeing your output on a laser projector, will you know exactly how it will look.

Pangolin QuickShow

What you get:

  • QuickShow software
  • Nearly 2000 pre-loaded cues
  • Instruction manual
  • Flashback 3 USB to ILDA adapter
  • USB cable
  • No dongles!
  • Never worry about forgetting or losing a dongle. You can work on, and display, shows without needing a dongle.

Cues
Nearly 2000 graphics, animations, beam effects and abstracts are included.

Abstract frames
Make planetarium-style abstract shapes, such as flowers or spirograph geometric figures.

Live controls
For a cue or the entire display, adjust size, position, rotation angle, rotation speed, color, color cycling, scan speed and animation rate.

QuickTools for creation and editing
QuickText, QuickShape, QuickTrace, QuickTargets, QuickTimeline, QuickDMX

Display methods
Single cue, multi-track cue, sequence cues, timeline show programming.

Display timing
Manual (mouse/keyboard), automatic to beat (BPM), autorun for sequences and timeline.

BPM methods
Timed, manual, or automatically triggers cues and effects to the beat of the music.

Preview
On-screen preview of all graphics and beams using Windows OpenGL.

Background work mode
Create/edit cues on-screen without affecting laser output. Only show your cues when you are done. The audience never sees your background work.

Autotrace bitmaps
Import GIF, JPG, BMP files and convert instantly to laser. Outline and centerline tracing modes.

Control DMX devices
Set up to 512 DMX channels per cue. Unlimited number of cues or “looks”.

Custom effects
Apply one or more effects to a cue, a sequence or a timeline event. Effects include colors (preset and changing), pulse/flash/strobe, trace, chop, ripple, mirror, double, scroll, rock, throb, zoom and bounce.

Projector correction and zones
Full geometric correction for off-axis scanning. HIt multiple screens from one projector, using projection zones (cues are positioned and scaled to appear in part of the scan area).
